This passage is challenging for most Americans. Sociologists who study spirtuality in America say a couple of things are true about us:

  1. There is enormous SPIRITUAL hunger in America; that's at an all time high; and at the same time
  2. there is a move away from institutional religion.

When asked the following question, 81% of Americans answered "yes": 

Do you believe you can be a very good Christian without attending church?

To restate the question: "Can God be powerfully at work in your life apart from being a part of Christ's body, the Church?" The answer in the New Testament, consistently and without exception, is a resounding "No."
